I sit here in reflection of the days I felt fear. When I had to fight everything, with an enemy of my choosing. When I fought with the enemy who was inside my own head. When I needed a tangible and physical reason for the way I felt or what was going on. The loneliness, the anger and the need to control every situation. When I looked out at the people around me and saw conflict and strife. When I saw them all to be untrustworthy and against me.
Last night, at church service, as Pastor talked of the finished works of our King and it reminded of those days. It reminded me not in a bad way, but in a good one. It confirmed what God has been showing me, that I need not worry, my need to battle is over. For when Jesus spoke those words, “it is finished” it was! My eyes were opened once again to this fact! It says so in the Word, God’s Word. I need not fight an enemy, not one has power over He who created the earth. If I rest in His Words, the why do I choose to fight? If I believe what He says, then what is there to battle? If I always turn to Him and rest in His arms, in His comfort and in His glory, then I have no reason to work so hard to defeat the already defeated!
The next time you feel attacked, you feel like you must fight, when your thoughts turn to an enemy… I urge you to speak these words before you say anything else, “It is finished”. Thank you a Jesus!
The Mountain
I stood at the bottom, looking up at its steep face. It seem to snarl at me, it’s teeth looked sharp like razors. It’s eyes stared down at me at first, then it looked away as if to say, you are too weak and I am so strong. I stared back, looking for my path up. I looked side to side, looking for my way around. Going around seemed long and exhausting. Going up the face looked dangerous and scary. I thought, what should I do? I don’t have the energy, I don’t have the strength…
I felt defeated, yet I hadn’t done anything yet. I felt alone, yet I sought no ones help. I dropped to my knees and I said, “Lord help me, I can’t do this”.
“He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.””
Matthew 17:20 NIV
I then raised up my hands, look straight into the face of the mountain and said “Hey you! Yes you, do you know who I am? I am a child of the most high! I am a son of God and He said that I have already won! That you were defeated before I even got here! Now get out of my way, I have things He needs me to do!”
The mountain trembled, it shook violently and began to crumble. I giant dust cloud lifted up and as it settled all I saw left there was a pile of rocks and straight through the middle was a path, my path He made just for me! I stood up and followed the path and on the other side, I found gratitude and thanksgiving. I also found my strength in Him and in myself!
Know who you are today and remember that everyday! Nothing is too mighty to Him, nothing is too small. He is there to help, He helped me and helps me every day. All I do is ask, all I do is stand in victory and I stand in faith that He will be there! He always is and I know He always will be!
Thank you Father, you are a good Daddy!

Who we are…
Who we are is not in the words we speak, it’s in the actions we take. When I was living in my addiction, I told everyone I was something different than who I actually was. I spoke of how good life was. How dependable I was. I told people how happy I was and that it didn’t get any better than this! I spoke of loving everything and everyone around me! You could trust me! So I said…
The truth was, I hated me and everything I was! I would tell you I was going to do something and not show up. You couldn’t trust my words, me with your words or with your money. I was always looking for a way to get on top or around something. The short cut was my way of life! Getting high or drunk for as cheap as possible was my way of life. I wanted full control over everything, I needed it so the bad things of my past wouldn’t become my present or my future.
After I got clean and so called sober, this didn’t change much. I was still looking for a short cut. I was still living in a self preservation state of mind. I was always looking at what was their angle, what did they want from me? You still couldn’t depend on me, I was only looking for a way to full the pain of my past. I was still looking for answers for why it happened and how to forget.
Then came Jesus! It took Him awhile, but He was patient. He showed me a different path. He showed me what forgiveness looked like! He showed me what true love of self and of others looked like! He made a new creation, a new and better version of me!
He taught me I didn’t have to forget my past, but to forgive it! What does that look like? It starts with being true to you! Being like His blueprint! Showing love to all, including you! Being honest and full of integrity! Letting go of all control, not trying to make people what I wanted them to be. Letting Jesus do the work with me, through me! To do things different, His way, not my way!
What I had to learn was that my past was a tool, not an obstacle. I had to see that it could help others, not destroy me. I had to learn that people heard my words and were watching my actions to see if they lined up. I found that words are just sounds, but actions are truth! You see I can say anything, I can twist words, I can recant and manipulate them. Actions however, they are visible signs of who you are! You cannot do something and it not be seen for exactly what it is. You can’t even do it when you are alone, because you are even watching you. Integrity starts right there.
As you go through the world, walk as Jesus did. Do what He did. Be an example not just a sound. Practice what you preach or it holds no value, no weight in the eyes of those who see you.
The Enemy
If something unpleasant happens to me and my thoughts and words were say, that’s the enemy’s doing… I have now given a defeated adversary a foundation, in which my mind will build four walls on top, a roof and a throne in which it can sit upon. “You” have just given credit to something that has only the power you give it. You created a fortress, a stronghold if you will, for a powerless foe to dwell in. This “enemy”, in your mind, will now be your go to, it will show up at the slightest sign of something amiss.
Your adversary will show up when the car starts running poorly. When you get the flu. When the finances get a tight or you lost your job. When that diagnosis from the doctor is not good or you lose a loved one. You will walk right over to the door, open and say “I know it’s you”!
The truth is, you need something to blame. It cannot be anything else except, “him”. It gives an out to our own thoughts, actions and reactions. You now have a battle field in which to wage war! You have drawn the line in the sand and you are going to drive the enemy right out of your life… until the next time.
I believe at one time there was a foe, a real enemy in which was defeated, but someone took care of that and I now walk in authority.
“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”
Luke 10:19 NIV
In the Old Testament, many battles were raged army against army. When those whom fought sought God, they were victorious! Those who believed the enemy was too powerful and too wise, they were defeated. It is no different for you and I, not at all. If we are seeking God in all we do, we have nothing to fear. He will take care of us! We will have victory over this life.
You see when we look to an outside source for our struggles it takes away our accountability for our woes. Our car is running poorly, well I haven’t changed my oil properly or had a tube up. It could be a nan made mechanical part failed. I probably should have washed my hands more or I wish to coworker would have stayed home when they had the flu. I shouldn’t have bought that flashy car, shoes or gotten that other credit card. I should have washed those vegetables from the store, took better care of my body or not drank so much alcohol. I sure will miss them but the Lord has called them home, their work is complete and I sure am glad He put them in my life.
Our perspective is our mindset there for our enemy dwells in our mind.
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV
We have all power and authority! Inside of flows the living water, the King of Kings, how can anything we don’t want or need dwell inside us? It can’t!
“I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.””
Mark 1:8 NIV
“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
Acts 2:4 NIV
“The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.””
Hebrews 10:15-16 NIV
Once we come to the truth of who He is, what He is and how powerful we are in Him, we need not even acknowledge anything but Him! Open no doors on your own! Walk through only those He opens for you! Set your mind on Christ, be mindful of your actions and responsibilities! Be accountable in all you do. The most important believe that His intentions for you are good, He is good all the time, He never changes! You have no reason to fear, no reason to battle, He will take care of you, if you ask him to.
Triggered, who me?
A defensive posture is a signal that you are operating out of a fear based mindset. It is your mind telling you that you lack, you are not good enough or you failed. You are trying to defend who you are, trying to prove to them that you are more than that mistake. What you are really doing is trying to prove it to yourself. What you are seeing this moment is who you think are all the time. You are drawing on the fears of the past, old moments and memories. What you fail to see is who you really are
in the Fathers eyes. When you see yourself from His perspective, it changes everything.
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
Psalms 139:14 KJV
What happens to us is we get “triggered”. Triggered, you say. What is a trigger. It is something from your past, a way in which you continue to view yourself from past experiences. Moments in time where you were hurt by something someone said or did to you. For example, most of my life I “felt” like no one listened to my suggestions, they didn’t hear me and thought I was stupid. I thought they just passed right by me because I didn’t measure up. I “felt” like they didn’t see me as qualified to be even talking about this to them. This trigger ran deep. It started way back in childhood and no I see how it has showed up it every relationship I have had all the way up to my relationships today. It would get so bad that when my wife would start asking me questions about something that was going on in our lives, I would get defensive, instantly. Her perspective was different, so would see it as she thought my view or idea wasn’t good enough. I “felt” like she thought she was smarter me, knew all the answers and not just didn’t hear me but wasn’t worth listening to. Talk about a relationship strain! I went around and around that mountain time and time again. It gets exhausting.
This is where we grow, recognizing these issue through the triggers in front of us. Once you see them, you now can repair mind and become how the Father sees you. When we see ourselves with His perspective, through Godly glasses, we are now changing our view of ourselves. We repair our hurts, we come into a mindset of who we really are.
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
Psalms 139:14 KJV
This is who you are! You are not insecure, not flawed or worthless. You are a child of God! You are a His and He dwells inside you! You carry His DNA, you have the heart of Jesus and the knowledge of God! When you see this, when we see this in each other… possibilities are endless.
“Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”
Mark 9:23 KJV
Today, I want you to look at yourself. It’s hard, believe me I know this to be a fact. But look at when you are disturbed, upset, angry or hurt. Now try and recognize why. What triggered you? Why did you “feel” this? Now take that to God, remove that from your life! You are a new creation and are wonderfully made! Receive His love and love from each other. Be who you are in Jesus and let the Jesus in you reign!
The Blueprint
What if we lived by grace? What does the world look like if we truly allowed grace to be our first nature? What if we followed the blueprint sent here by God? Jesus is that blueprint. If you read the New Testament and you see how he handled all adversity, how he handled the hate and persecution. He did not just let it go, but He also attempted to teach as He let them know where their hearts were. He still came from a place of love. He did not let them run Him over, but He also did not cast hate towards them. He may have called out what they were acting like but He did not wish ill upon them. Just the opposite, He pointed out how their actions, as leaders in the church, were misguiding others. He saw the hardness inside them, He saw how calais they had become and wished better for them.
Jesus spoke to, ate with and hung out with the “sinners”. He projected love their way. He spoke words of life into them. He had an own dialogue with them, full of transparency and understanding. He looked past their transgressions, pasts their lack and sorrows. He lived them right where they were, even if He didn’t agree with what they were doing. He told them how the Father saw them, He told them how the Father wished they would live their lives.
“Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.”
John 5:19 KJV
We get so caught up in our own agenda, so caught up in what we feel others should do, that we lose sight of what the Father is doing. We push aside the blueprint and start doodling our own doctrine.
Jesus taught us how to deal with every situation, everything that will come our way. It doesn’t matter if it was two thousand years ago or today, the same things arise. People are people, culture, race and religion, we are still people. We have emotions, a will and opinions. We all use them, but how you use them is important.
I wish to be more like Jesus. I work daily on following the blueprint and His example. I want to love everyone, be kind and mindful. I don’t want to get lost in my own understanding, but live in the fullness of the Father! I want to do what He is doing! I want to be an example of how to be, not what to not to be. As you walk through your day, week and month, ask yourself if you are following the blueprint. When you encounter people and situations, ask yourself if this is what Jesus would do. Then respond to it as He would.
Perfection… Love
We search for peace in our own way, in our own understanding. We should be searching out God’s peace for us, in His understanding. We seek out a perfect life, we miss the fact that life is perfect in Him! That all things through Him is perfection! We look to physical things, we seek physical perfection, money, possessions and physical contact as what makes us whole. We are already whole, we are already perfect in the love of our Father. When we are perfect in Him that made us perfect, our love is also perfect! Love being the only thing that can be perfect! When our love is overflowing, when self love is bursting out of us, that is because we are receiving the Fathers love for us. In this perfect love, we then flow this love to our brothers and sisters, just as Jesus did!
“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
I Corinthians 13:13 NKJV
The greatest is love! I ask you to feel that love today. Feel the Fathers love pour out onto you! Take a moment for yourself and let it rain down upon you! Then go out, as Jesus did and pass out perfection on to the world, on to your brothers and sisters! Walk in perfection for God is perfect and look how you were made…
“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
Genesis 1:27 NKJV
Like a child
“Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.”
Mark 10:15 KJV
I believe wen Jesus spoke these words He was giving us a big insight. Children live in the moment, they live by what is here, right now. They receive the gift of today, without thought. Do we do that? Or do we say, but what about when I was struggling, where were you then? As we gain in age, we are hardened by our past. We build walls and barriers around it and it causes denial and intolerance. A child though, it’s heart is soft, pure and accepting. Have you ever seen a child get a spanking and turn to the person who spanked them for comfort? Think about that for a second… We as adults, would never do that. We would turn away. ( In some cases we should, I’m not saying if your being abused in the flesh, you should stay) If God does not act how we want, do what we want is that grounds for turning away? A child doesn’t. It seeks comfort from its parent. Do you seek comfort from your Father when He does answer your request or He let’s you go through trials. Isn’t that the point? As we grow in Christ, shouldn’t we always seek our Father? Shouldn’t we always turn to Him for comfort? YES!
I believe, God just actually said to me, when you accept Me, you are coming to me as a child. You are saying, Daddy, I know that you are all knowing, the great comforter and that I can rely on You. I know that You see my heart, You see who I can be and You want the same for me. Father, please take me under Your wing, feed me knowledge and understanding. Show me Your ways and allow me into Your world, Your Kingdom. Let me do what I see You do, speak how You would speak and act how You would have me act.
Come to Him today, like a child. Say Daddy, I want more of You…
Leading by our wounds
In one way or another, we are all leaders. Some are called to bigger things and some are not. It really doesn’t matter, if it is The President, at your job, in your family or in your church, we all have some sort of role of leadership. I hear you some of you saying to yourself, “I don’t lead anything.” Just because don’t have a title doesn’t mean you are not leading someone to somewhere. I would almost guarantee that you are being watched and if you are doing it right, someone is following your example. The flip side is if your doing it wrong, someone is also following your example. Put a title or a role in front of what it is you are doing and it just became even more significant.
Let’s say you are a complainer, a gossip or a blame delegator and you are in a leadership role, guess what you are going to create. Even if you are doing some things correctly, these will be the things that stand out. They will see the negative before the positive and will run with it. Let’s take the complainer for an example. He is a manager for a company, he walks over to an employee that he is leading and starts to complain about another employee. He starts talking about his lack of productivity, his messy area or his inability to do his job. How do you think the employee who is being told this is going to react? There are several ways that this could go… One, is he could think, “does he talk about me like this?” Two, he could think the other employee is not a good employee. Three, he could think that the manager is a jerk and should be keeping this opinion and information to himself. There are more scenarios but you get the idea.
Now let’s look at it from the “poor employee’s” stand point. If this gets back to him, it will, what is he to think of this? Put yourself in his shoes, what would you think? Maybe this is a leadership issue, not an employee issue. Has he approached the guy and asked if everything is good with him. Has he found out if the guy needs more training. Maybe he has heard the gossip about him and thinks he is just a bad employee. There is one more scenario, maybe he has watched others or even the manager not giving his all and is just following the example set before him. If the manager is a wait and see manager. You know the type, let’s see if it works itself out type of leader, a leader who tolerates and instead of initiates, then he may have created this employee himself.
Hmmm…
Let me flip this over now. Do you think the manager was just born a jerk? This is just his personality? When you look at someone’s past it will tell you a lot about them. Maybe the manager’s dad was hard on him, talked about him to others, talked about his lack. Could be he was under a manager who treated him this way. It may even be as simple as his home life is not that great and he takes life out on others. All three of theses things can be changed, but until they are, He has open wounds. Trying to lead when you have been wounded, when your still hurting is a disaster! If you have not worked on these things, it is almost certain that they will show up in your life. The deeper the wound, the harder to heal.
There are many examples in the Bible about wounded people leading and each one has its own unique result. Saul is a great example. He was crowned King, at his own ceremony he hid. He was in fear before he was put in position by God and rode that path out until he was killed. He feared the very men he should have trusted the most. David was his greatest ally, would have followed Saul anywhere and done just about anything for him. Saul feared David, so he tried to kill him, his own fear of lack, got the best of him and God punished him for it. Saul was wounded, he was a fearful man, his own thoughts ruled him. He thought he was not good enough, brave enough or smart enough an it destroyed him. It made him a poor leader and it showed in the decision he made. If he had listened to Samual, listened to God and followed God’s will, God’s rule and what God thought he was, Saul would have been a mighty and powerful leader. But he allowed his wounds to guide him.
I have seen this in my own life, I have lived in fear of my own lack, my own thoughts of inequity. They came back, time and time again. They ruled me, they controlled me and I had no power over them. Until one day, in a small church, things changed. I gave myself to Jesus, I surrendered to God and I continue to surrender. It was not an overnight repair. I had been broken along time and the process took some time. I am better for it today! I am a better man, husband, employee and leader. I am most of all a better servant to my King! He leads better than anyone of us, if we follow Him, we do by His example, we can all be mighty and powerful leaders!
